Annan gave the international community the broadest legal, political and normative landscape imaginable to tackle some of the most fundamental problems confronting humanity, within the larger context of global governance.
Annan will be remembered as the soft-spoken diplomat from Africa who inspired a generation to dream that states, civil society, NGOs and intergovernmental organizations could work coherently, and somehow triumph over impunity, poverty, disease and war — a dream though still deferred.
